CAMDEN, Ark. — The city of Camden holds claim to the oldest, active police officer in the state of Arkansas.

Leonard Charles Smith, also known as “L.C. Buckshot,” celebrated his 90th birthday on May 12, MyArklamiss.com reports.

Smith spent 46 years at the Ouchita County Sheriff’s Office before retiring in 2010. Four months later, he began working at the Camden Police Department, where he works today.

"They wanted me to come work with the Camden Police Department," Smith said. "They said I had too much wisdom and knowledge and they needed it over here."

Smith has been in law enforcement for a total of 56 years, working a typical eight-hour shift during a four-day work week.

He’s also an assistant coroner for a funeral home, a deacon at his church, a neighborhood watch coordinator and the special events coordinator at his police department.

The department and city recently held a celebration for Smith and declared May 12 as L.C. Buckshot day.
