GARDEN CITY, Mo. — Only the chief remains at the Garden City Police after city officials decided to lay off thea department’s entire staff Wednesday, KAKE reported.
The Garden City mayor and city council provided no reason for the sudden firing, Chief Thomas Alber told KAKE. “In my 30 years of law enforcement, I’ve never seen anything like this,” Alber said.
The Garden City Police consisted of seven officers and five volunteers for a population of roughly 1,600. Last year, the department responded to nearly 2,000 calls.
Mayor Daniel Cantrell told KAKE the decision was made for financial reasons.
“What hurts the most is this wanton disregard for the public safety of the community,” Alber said.
The Cass County Sheriff’s Office will take over for the disbanded department, according to Cantrell.
